Painted for a weekly sketch group on Livejournal. Not entirely finished - wings need work, lighting's all over the place but it was an excercise in skin tones. The topic was 'Angel of Light', but I'd been looking at Royo and listening to gothic rock all afternoon :) ... there's an angel, and there's some light, it kind of fits!

Time spent: 4hours.
Painter mainly (some editing in photoshop)

Used own reference shot for pose, and cathedral window design from a school text book (can't remember which one)

love the angel and the wings..
i'd wouldn't change a thing
good colors pick out.

question: to do something in comps what program you use i guessing it called painter to do more of 2D or maybe even 3D (graphics) sorry i new to it but like to learn maybe thought you may know or if you know someone who knows.
wow, great sketch. these brushstrokes on the skin are so quick looking, but it's very realistic-looking when you zoom out. neat how you dealt with the wing attachment to the back, with the skin slowly getting covered by feathers. :)

Some of them were fairly quick strokes ;) I find working with the smeary oil gives a great affect for the more 'painterly' style, besides I actually worked relatively small and then upsized it. I may finish it off more at some stage... just not today!

Do you know, hardly anyone shows that section of a wing! Angels just seem to have wind magically attached!

Sweet! I like this piece very much...the pose, the shading, everything! Very nicely done!

Thanks Bonnie :)

I use a digital tablet (like a wacom - mine's an old el-cheapo version ;) Dolphin I think). This allows you a greater control over the image as it's like drawing with a pen - and it has pressure sensitivity so you can adjust how 'thick' the paint is, or how 'wide' the line is. This was mostly painted in Painter with a little bit of work in photoshop. There are a number of different applications for digital art - but Photoshop is the mainstay. Other 2D apps include things like PaintShop Pro (PSP) and Illustrator. 3D software can be 3D Studio Max, Poser, DAZ Studio (they used to have a free version), Vu d'esprit... All can cost a lot but there are many cheaper alternatives.
